Planet Mercury: Volcanism in a theatre of global contraction, with examples from the Hokusai quadrangle

Mercury's geological history has been dominated by global contraction caused secular cooling of the planet's interior. This had a profound effect on expression volcanism and tectonism, expressions these two surface evolutionary processes are deeply intertwined. Here, we use case studies from Hokusai quadrangle Mercury to gain insight into interplay between which review throughout this paper. We perform first crater size–frequency analysis southernmost extent Borealis Planitia, largest expanse volcanic plains, find that it formed ~3.8–3.7 Ga. discuss importance “intermediate plains”, widespread unit in quadrangle, as manifestation relatively low-volume effusions with an uncertain stratigraphic relationship Planitia. Finally, detail formation Suge Facula pitted ground during Rachmaninoff crater, hypothesise such textures probably more widely but have often either buried thick lava flows or otherwise obscured. Unanswered questions work can be used drive next phase exploration research arrival BepiColombo mission.
